Designing a global telephony architecture across multiple regions

Automotive sector case study
Enabling scalable global communications through a structured Teams transformation approach

Customer Overview

Konekt (Formerly Nuvias UC) partnered with a leading global automotive supplier during a critical phase of their digital transformation.

The customer operates across Europe, China, India, North America, and Latin America. Each region has unique telephony regulations and legacy technologies such as DECT, analogue phones, and local PBXs.

The challenge

The sheer scale of the project brought significant hurdles. The customer had already experienced stalled progress with other providers, leading to a degree of scepticism.

At the same time, the complexity of coordinating thousands of users across multiple regions with diverse telephony requirements added another layer of difficulty. With more than 20 internal technicians involved, maintaining consistency and direction was critical.

What Konekt did

The project was structured into multiple phases, beginning with a Proof of Concept, followed by the setup of the Teams Direct Routing infrastructure. This included defining a clear naming convention for policies, migrating test users, developing a robust Method of Procedure (MoP), and creating migration standards for different sites and regions.

Because each country had unique technical and regulatory requirements, the MoPs were customised accordingly. The customer then migrated users in controlled batches, following the agreed standards, while Konekt provided expert oversight.

Konekt provided professional services on a flexible monthly post-pay model. The approach was hybrid: Konekt designed the architecture and guided the process, while the customer’s own strong IT team executed the work packages.

To optimise security and reduce the number of SBCs connected to Teams, Konekt designed a global five-hub architecture using proxy SBCs. Existing SBCs were moved into the DMZ and re-used, reducing cost and complexity.

The outcome

The final phase involved decommissioning the global Skype for Business environment, ensuring a full transition to the newly designed Teams Phone System.

Since 2022, Konekt consultants have been continuously supporting the customer on their journey from legacy PBX and Skype for Business systems to a modern, cloud-based telephony platform.

Throughout the project, the customer acquired several new companies, and thanks to the global telephony architecture we designed, these acquisitions could be integrated seamlessly and efficiently.

This long-term partnership demonstrates how a scalable, well-planned architecture can adapt to organisational growth and business change.

This enabled the customer to scale globally while maintaining consistency, control and cost efficiency.
